Precision solutions for machining rare-earth magnets
Rare-earth magnets are the heartbeat of modern technologies – from electric motors to wind turbines.
Their enormous magnetic strength requires the highest precision in machining. With EHWA Europe's innovative grinding solutions, we guarantee results that meet the demands of industry.
Rare-earth magnets such as neodymium (NdFeB) and samarium (SmCo) play a central role in modern industry. With a global market share of around 60% for neodymium magnets and around 3% for samarium magnets, they dominate applications that require the highest performance – particularly in the automotive industry, electric motors, and wind turbines.
EHWA Europe offers specially developed grinding solutions that enable the precise machining of these permanent magnets. Our double-disc surface grinding wheels ensure flatness and high dimensional stability to meet demanding customer requirements.
Used in technologies such as drive systems, generators, and electronic controls, our tools help these magnets deliver their performance in critical applications.
Manufacturing process of rare-earth magnets
The production of rare-earth magnets goes through three main processes: sintering, machining, and assembly. Each of these steps requires precision and specialized technologies.
Step 1: Sintering
This is where the basic material structure that forms the foundation for the magnetic strength is created. The materials are compacted in specially developed sintering furnaces.
Step 2: Machining processes
This process includes steps such as lapping (double-disc surface grinding wheels for precise flatness), cutting or multi-wire cutting (precision cutters for exact dimensions), form grinding (electroplated wheels for shaping), barrel/stone polishing (with ceramic media for a smooth surface), and surface treatment (coating for additional protection).
Step 3: Assembly
In the final step, the components are assembled to give the magnet its specific functionality.
